Danny's Memorial Page

(View Pedigree)

Danny was my little enigma. The dictionary defines an enigma as somebody or something that is not easily explained or understood: a paradox, conundrum, problem, mystery, riddle, puzzle, question, perplexity. This definitely describes my Danny. We sometimes called him "Difficult Danny." He was very smart, athletic and agile. Nothing, not even bad knees (he was diagnosed with 2 bad knees at his new puppy visit and has had surgery on the left knee), could slow him down. Danny was quite a character. Unlike all of my other toy poodles, he was very high strung . He was nervous, skittish, and extremely temperamental. I was never been able to completely housebreak him. For the last year, he had to wear a belly band. He woulde lift his leg and mark all over the house and he liked to find hidden areas in the house to poop. He developed the nervous habit of licking his front paws (this is a nervous behavior not caused by his allergies), blankets, carpeting, etc. The hair that had gotten stuck in his teeth from the licking rotted out his gums and teeth.

I know he loved us in his own way and we have learned that we have to accept that.

Danny has an overbite; was cryptorchid; has really bad atopic allergies causing him to chew the hair off his body (each year the allergy issue last longer- to the point where it became an all year long issue - we finally seem to have the allergies under control); his hind paws are pigeon-toed which makes him walk strangely-his rear end swishes from side to side as he walks; he has extremely thin, fine hair; he has anal gland issues; and his body is often covered with large, hard sebaceous cysts.

Danny developed a very nasty nasal cavity infection (December 2014). By the middle of March 2015, even after being on an oral antibiotic and antibiotic nose drops he was still having problems. We ntired different antibiotics. They exrayed him but weren't able to find the cause of his spasms. As the year progressed, the awful episodes got worse. His entire body would spasm and he couldn't breathe when he was having an attack.

On December 28, 2015, I made the hard dedecision to put him down. By this point he was such an unhappy little guy. His little body would just be shaking all day.

This is a video taken on 12/16/14 to show to our vet of Danny experiencing one of the attacks. This is just 2 minutes of the attack which lasted about 30 minutes. The video file is large, almost 18 meg and is a .wmv format (I don't know if it will run on the Mac platform).

Danny after his knee surgery May 2007.

Danny's femur was lacking an apporpriate groove for the patella. His vet carved a groove into the bone during the surgery. Although his right knee is also not good, thus far, he has not had to have surgery on it.

You can see the pink of the skin in the picture above. Allergies cause Danny to scratch and bite himself causing him to tear out the hair on his body.

Danny has very thin hair and absolutely no boddy fat so he gets cold easily. This is his favorite place to stand during the winter months!

Because of Danny's bad atopic allergies, he chews off his hair if it isn't covered. We bought him a new t-shirt today which fits him perfectly, both in size and in what it says!

Danny Walking around

Danny has a strange-looking gait. He is rather pigeon-toed on his hind legs and swings his hind legs under his body when he walks, almost like he is walking on a tightrope.
